Pros and cons TV with internal tuner

Many (new) televisions have nowerdays one or more internal tuners, suitable for the reception of digital tv by cable or terrestic. But also tv's with an internal DVB-S2 tuner become more and more common. TV's with an internal tuner don't need a seperate digital receiver anymore. This is one of the biggest advantages of a TV with an internal tuner; no seperate settop box is necessary anymore, so less space is required, less power is used and only one remote control is needed to control the TV.

Most of the time a so called Conditional Access Module (CAM) is required in combination with the TV. This CAM module is placed on the back side of the TV. The smartcard, for reading the tv subscription, is placed into the CAM module.

With tv's, having an internal DVB-T tuner, it's possible to receive terrestic digital tv. By connecting an antenna to the tv it's possible to receive the free channels. This are mainly the public providers and the regional channels from your region.

With a subscription it's also possible to watch pay tv. The special smartcard of the provider is placed into the CAM module, which is placed again on the backside of the TV into the VI slot. In this way you can watch terrestic digital tv, without seperate decoder.

@Smit module for digital tv by cableTV with internal DVB-C tuner (cable)

TV's with an internal DVB-C tuner are prepared for the reception of digital tv by cable. To watch digital tv by cable, a CI+ module and a smartcard of tv provider is required. The smartcard is placed into the CI+ module and together they are placed into the CI-slot of the television.

Many tv providers have their own encrypting, so you need to check which CI module is required! Not every module can be used in combination with each provider. At Ziggo you can us a module if the tv is certified by Ziggo. Also subscribers of other cable tv providers, like Caiway or Delta, can use this list.

Do you have a subscription of Caiway then a CI+ module is only necessary when you want to watch channels outside the standard basic package. The channels in the basic package are broadcasted without encryption. With a TV with internal DVB-C tuner it's possible to watch the basic package of Caiway.

TV with internal DVB-S tuner (satellite)

More and more tv's are provided with an internal DVB-S tuner, suitable for digital tv by satellite. Again the CI module plus smartcard (for the reception of pay-tv) is required to watch the tv channels. Furthermore a satellite dish antenna and other satellite equipment is required to wacth satellite tv. For the reception of the Free-to-Air channels a CI module, smartcard or sunscription isn't necessary. When you want to watc pay-tv as well by satellite, then in The Netherlands the only provider is Canal Digital, in Belgium  TV Flanders (Dutch spoken) or TéléSat (French spoken) for a subscription. Other providers of satellite tv aren't available (yet).

Disadvantages of TV's with an internal tuner

The biggest disadvantage of a TV with an internal tuner is the limited functionality. With such a TV it's only possible to record the channel you're watching; switching to another channel isn't possible during recording. With a seperate digital settop box there's more 'freedom', especially when the settop box is provided with mulitple tuners.

Another disadvantage is the absence of interactive tv services (unless it's a smart tv). It's not possible to recall for instance "Uitzending gemist". Also services like "Video on Demand" are not available on tv´s with an internal tuner (unless it's a smart TV).
